Our project PEDvolution has been approved by the project sponsor, which we think is great! Therefore, we want to tell you here in this article what the project is about, who is involved and when the whole thing will start.
What is the theory behind PEDvolution?
Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) are urban areas that optimize energy consumption by increasing efficiency and integrating renewable energy sources so that they generate more energy than they consume. These areas strive to generate surplus energy and inject it into the energy system rather than just consuming energy. A PED aims to promote sustainable energy practices, reduce CO2 emissions, and reduce dependence on non-renewable energy sources.
PEDs use a variety of approaches to energy conservation and generation, such as:
- Energy efficiency: designing buildings and infrastructure so that they use less energy. This is possible through insulation, energy-efficient lighting, advanced heating and cooling systems, and smart energy management systems.
- Renewable energy sources: PEDs use local renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, or geothermal to generate power. Urban infrastructure integrates solar panels, wind turbines, and other technologies.
- Energy and resource use optimization: promoting the use of surplus energy, which is converted into heat or electricity and fed back into the energy system. They can also intelligently manage energy flows and adjust consumption to meet peak demand periods.
- Cross-sector integration: PEDs take into account not only the energy sector, but also other sectors such as mobility, information technology and industry. This enables comprehensive planning and optimization of resource use.
PEDs are innovative approaches to making cities more sustainable and environmentally friendly by looking at energy generation, consumption and management in an integrated way. They play an important role in addressing the challenges of climate change and reducing the environmental impact of urban communities.
What is the PEDvolution project about?
Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) represent the cutting edge of the urban energy revolution managed by municipalities. These improve energy efficiency, effectively integrate renewable energy and surplus heat. They interact with energy, mobility, technology, and industry. PEDs are constantly evolving due to social context, laws, energy market and other factors.
The PEDvolution project enables cross-sector integration of PEDs over three years in analysis, co-development and demonstration. European pioneers are developing seven solutions for PED evolution, including tools for design, assessment, decision-making, energy management, data integration, business models, and social innovation. These solutions assess and improve “PED Readiness Level” based on social, technological, interoperability, and market aspects. Six European PEDs serve as demonstration environments and promote replication, upscaling and mainstreaming.

Our tasks
Several PEDs will demonstrate PEDvolution solutions to promote replication, upscaling, and mainstreaming. These PEDvolution demonstrators are either partners in the consortium or will be identified and selected through an open call for proposals. The three PEDvolution demonstrators that are partners in the consortium are 1) Wunsiedel-DE (partners SWW, ZENOB, ESG), 2) Kranj-SI (partners EG, GEK), and 3) Hard Community Winterthur-CH (partner WIN).
We will support in the implementation of the PEDvolution demonstrator in Wunsiedel.
